Yesterday night, I annoyed my barber.
I’ve forgotten what we were discussing on, then I jokingly abused him.
I’ve known this barber for a year now, and joking expensively isn’t a new thing. I thought he would swallow it in and act as if nothing happened as usual, but No, the joke hit him hard.
So he removed the mirror in front of me and kept it inside a small room. This way, he had succeeded in making me not to see what exactly he was doing on my head. He was already half way barbing my hair when this happened and I couldn’t just stand up and walk away. Secondly it was already late and no other barbing shop around was open.
“Barber James what is it naw?” I asked him, feeling so paranoid and worried. I had a conference to attend the next day, and I needed to look very presentable because I would be making a presentation in front of my boss and several other dignitaries.
“The mirror is having technical issues” he replied.
I thought it was a joke because it sounded funny. So I laughed and laughed at the thought of a mirror having technical issues. But he didn’t laugh; he only waited for me to finish laughing and then he continued barbing me without saying a word. Nothing. No further comments. No mirror in front of me. Just silence. Absolute silence.
“Barber James there’s no mirror for me to see what you’re doing on my head naw”
“Oga, I’m almost done, don’t turn your head so that you won’t spoil the design” he interrupted. I knew there was no design; he was just plotting an evil scheme on my head.
“James please I have a conference tomorrow, sorry for yabbing you that way”
But he didn’t reply until when he was done; then he told me that my hair was ready. I asked him for a mirror so that I could check out the haircut, but he refused to give it to me. He claimed that the technical issue on the mirror had to be resolved before using it again.
I didn’t pay him. I left angrily.
“To hell with you and your technical issues!” I cursed.
He didn’t care. I could hear him and his apprentice boys laughing at me from a distance, when I’d already left the shop.
When Tricia Opened the door for me that night, she immediately burst out laughing. “What is on your head?” She asked.
It was enough for me to confirm what Barber James had done on my head. So she helped me shave off everything with a shaving stick that night.
I was the only one who wore a cap to the conference the next day. That wasn’t the end of it; Tricia jokingly told me the next day at that I was looking like a monkey. Because of my skinny bald head. All because of Barber James.
Anyways, whatever you do in life, try not to annoy your barber.
